Far-reaching development in health sector attained at various medical centres on the island over the last few years enables to term Cuba as a true medical stronghold.

Medical industry is manufacturing tomographers of nuclear magnetic resonance applied in medical diagnosis, while an innovative technique known as dorso-lateral sub-thalamotomy is successfully used in patients with Parkinson disease. Likewise, there are medicines only produced on the island with high demand on the external market as Dermofural to treat pityriasis and pyodermitis. Cutaneous Candidiasis; Anti-meningococcyc vaccine; Photother: laser equipment used in phototherapy.

On the other hand, Cubans surgeons perform since long ago organ transplantations and many other complicated surgeries. Vitiligo and Pigmentary Retinosis are cured here. The abovementioned techniques and treatment are applied and followed up at first-class institutions as the Clinical-Surgical hospital “Hermanos Ameijeiras” and Clinic “Cira García”, Orthopedic hospital “Frank País”, Centero for Pigmentary Retinosis, as well as the institutes of Cardiology, Oncology, Neurology, Endocrinology, Angiology, Nephrology, Hematology, Tropical Medicine and Labor Medicine.

Thanks to the plans for medical investigations and state-run free public health systems, the country has reached highest rates in preventing and curing many diseases only compared with those of first world countries and, in several cases, our rates are above theirs. Lauded Doctor Rodrigo Álvarez Cambra, also professor at the University of Havana, author of many books of Orthopedics that have been translated into various languages and director of Havana’s Orthopedic hospital “Frank País”, has created external fixers called RALCA, already known worldwide.

Dr. Cambra has headed highly complicated surgical operations on the island and abroad being requested by world stars, athletes and 8 Heads of States have been his patients. The late Dr. Orfilio Peláez is the author an effective therapeutical method to treat Pigmentary Retinosis, hereditary and degenerative chronic disease that can cause total blindness. It damages 0,5% of the world population.

Not to speak of the national affiliate institution to treat people living with AIDS located in Santiago de Las Vegas with 300 beds and another one called Nazareno, located in San José de las Lajas with 105 beds.
