Thousands of Cubans learning Computer Sciences

Havana, Jul 23 (Prensa Latina) Some 61,400 Cubans have graduated from the country´s 300 Computing Clubs, as part of the Government´s efforts to spread knowledge on forefront technologies among the population.


According to "Granma" newspaper, these centers are equipped with 5,200 computers and have Internet access, adding that 60 new such institutions will open in peripheral neighborhoods in all provinces of the country.

More than 700,000 children, youths and adults have graduated from different courses taught at the Computing Clubs (locally known as Joven Clubs, or Youth Clubs) throughout the island since the first such institution opened 17 years ago.

Enrolment in computer courses has increased considerably over the past five years, adds the newspaper.

During the summer season, these clubs host some 50,000 users, who take two-week courses, and participate in digital drawing contests and the national video game Olympics.
