Cuba is expanding maternal care

Prensa Latina

Havana, May 4.- Havana will expand the service and capacity of maternal homes during the first half of 2004, by adding 642 beds in 48 clinics, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

The investment program in the new homes has reached 90 percent of completion, and construction works are scheduled to be completed by the end of the first semester of 2004.

Experts said the Cuban health system’s strategy aims not only to reduce infant, school or maternal mortality, but also to take good care of adolescents and adult women.

The results of the Mother-Child Program, they said, depend on the joint work by specialists and social workers. Among benefits of maternal homes is the reduction in the number of children with low weight at birth, due to the excellent care and control that pregnant women receive.
