Cuba Relected to the ITU Council

CUBA, 20 November 2006.- Cuba was reelected for the fifth consecutive time as a member of the Council of the International Telecommunications Union, according to diplomatic sources in Havana.

The election took place during the Plenitotentiaries Conference , the supreme body of the ITU, in session since November 6, in the Turkish city of Antalya.

The Caribbean nation obtained one of the eight positions assigned to the Americas with a vote count of 115, higher than in previous elections.

The Cuban delegation to the ITU Conference, which meets every four years in Turkey, considered being part of the governing body of the ITU that is made up of 46 members, a success for the nation.

The Cuban representatives also thanked the Latin American nations for their support, according to a note sent out by the Cuban Embassy in Turkey to local news media.

For the Americas the following nations were also elected as members of the Council of the ITU : Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico, Argentina, Trinidad and Tobago, Canada and the United States of America.

Cuba denounced at the Conference, which ends on November 25, the continuous aggression by the government of the United States of America against the nations of the region in the area of telecommunications.

The Cuba delegation described the actions by the White House as aggressive and a shameless violation of the standards and laws established by the ITU, according to the report.

The Plenipotentiaries Conference is the most important event of the International Telecommunications Union, a specialized agency of the United Nations in charge of regulating telecommunications at an international level, which has its venue in Geneva, Switzerland. (Cubaminrex-Granma)
