Energy Revolution Brings UN Official to Cuba
CUBA, July 4, 2007.- The executive director of the UN Environment Program, Achim Steiner, said in Havana that the Energy Revolution taking place in Cuba is one of the main reasons that brings him to the island.
In a visit Tuesday to the headquarters of Cuba's Foreign Ministry, Steiner expressed interest in getting to know how and why the Caribbean country has a greater advancement than other nations in the rational use of energy and the way that reverberates in its economy.
"Cuba is a very well educated country with a developing economy, but in many cases it applies policies that many underdeveloped nations don't have the possibility to do," he said in a conversation with Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque.
Steiner also expressed interest in the way the island has developed a system of prevention and warning against natural disasters.
The UN Environment Program director is in Cuba to participate at the 6th Convention on the Environment and Development.
The event is the most important of its kind celebrated in Cuba. In its six editions more than 4,000 delegates and guests have participated, of which 1,500 were representing more than 50 countries.
The Convention is considered valuable for reflection, learning, the exchange of opinions and criteria, as well as viable alternatives towards solving environmental problems that affect the planet. (Cubaminrex-RHC)
