Cuban Foreign Ministry Heads Delegation to COP16 in Mexico

CUBA, November 29th, 2010.- Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez is heading the delegation from the island attending the that kicked off Monday in Cancun, Mexico.

According to Prensa Latina news agency, Cuba will urge developed countries to undertake the principle commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Officially referred to as the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties COP16 will be presided over by Patricia Espinosa, Mexico’s Foreign Minister.

In addition to government officials, representatives of civil and social organizations, UN’s officials and around 2,000 journalists totaling about 25,000 people traveled to Mexico to take part in the event.

Participants will try to reach agreements in terms of reforestation, adaptation and technology transfer in an effort to relief global warming.

Despite ruling out the possibility of reaching an agreement to address the release of ozone depleting gases, Mexican President Felipe Calderon was optimistic when assuring that “unprecedented decisions” will come out of the event, says a Telesur report.

The COP 15 of Copenhagen, Denmark, was a disappointment as participating countries didn’t reach a binding agreement on greenhouse gas emissions due to the intransigence and maneuvers on the part of the United States and other developed natins that refused to commit to reasonable reductions.
