Copenhagen: A Coup d´etat against the UN Charter
Denmark. December 21. — A consensus had not been reached on Saturday for the approval of a final document in which the US attempted to impose on the participants at summit in Copenhagen.
Serious contradictions were evident at the summit, after European nations reportedly proposed money in exchange of the approval of the text which was strongly rejected by many nations including Cuba.
Venezuela warned that if the Washington-backed text were to be approved, it would mean a coup d’etat for the United Nations.
AFP news agency pointed out that US President Barack Obama had characterized the accord as “significant,” but lacked any legal value if it was not submitted to the 192 members participating in the conference.
Obama left the meeting before the delegates voted on the proposed text.
Venezuela, Bolivia, Cuba, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Sudan and the small South Pacific archipelago of Tuvalu expressed their condemnation when they were able to access the text during the midnight hours and which they characterized as “disrespectful” process of the UN.
TeleSUR TV reported that Venezuelan delegate, Claudia Salerno expressed “indignation” at the way the summit has dealt with such an important issue affecting millions of people all over the world.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez expressed that the island will not accept a declaration presented by the President of the Climate Change Conference.
“We are shocked and offended by the methods used”, he said, while the delegations from Bolivia assured that they could not discuss a document that they have “not seen”.
The delegation from Tuvalu, meanwhile, expressed that it was important to have results based on science to achieve a significant reduction of gas emissions that affect global warming, and stressed that any other agreement “would be the end of Tuvalu”. (cubaminrex - RHC)
