Online Debate on Climate Changes Celebrated

HAVANA,  November 18, 2011.- The online debate “Science and politics in the future of climate negotiations towards Durban” was held this morning at the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with participation from all over the world.

The online debate, sponsored by the Cuban Association of United Nations, was atended by renowned specialists and researcher on the issue, among them are: Orlando Rey Santos, B.A. Director of the Environment, Dr. Gisela Alonso, President of the Environmental Agency; Dr. Luis Paz, Researcher of the Climate Center and Expert at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; Dr. Gladys Hernández, Researcher of the Research Center on World Economy; Liliana Núñez Velis, President of Foundation Antonio Núñez Jiménez; and Carlos Amat, Director General of CNCU. Representatives of the Commission on the Environment and Sustainable Development of the Cuban Association of United Nations  and the Argentine Association of United Nations also participated.

Among the issues discussed by the specialists and participants were: the crisis caused by climate change; the adaptation and mitigation of the climate changes; the long-term cooperation;  the mechanisms to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, the role of the non-governmental organizations, among others.

Participants from 10 countries exchanged ideas during the debate. Besides this traditional online exchange, Twitter messages were sent to nearly 16,000 followers.

In the forthcoming days, the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change will be held in Durban. This meeting takes place at a crucial moment for the planet: the global economic crises that the world goes trough is an irrefutable example of how unsustainable the production and consumption patterns we use today are.
