Foreign Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Anifah Aman, to Attend NAM Meeting in Havana

MALAYSIA, April 28, 2009. Foreign Minister Datuk Anifah Aman will attend a two-day ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Havana, Cuba beginning Tuesday.

He will be accompanied by his wife, Datin Siti Rubiah Abdul Samad, and senior officials of the ministry, to the meeting.

A statement from Wisma Putra said the meeting was to finalise preparations for the forthcoming 15th Summit of NAM in Sham El-Sheikh, Egypt which is scheduled to be held from July 11-16, as well as to exchange views on current issues and challenges facing developing countries.

According to the statement, the ministers were envisaged to adopt two documents, namely the Final Document containing NAM's pronouncements on various current issues and challenges, and the Declaration on Palestine containing NAM's position on the Palestinian issue.

Anifah, who is scheduled to deliver his speech at the meeting on April 29, would speak on the role of NAM, current and future challenges confronting the organisation, particularly on issues concerning political developments in Middle East, disarmament and international security, as well as economic and financial crisis.

He is also scheduled to have bilateral meetings with his counterparts on the sidelines of the meeting.

The statement said the meeting would give Malaysia the opportunity to reiterate its position on key international issues, as well as enhance its role on matters affecting NAM member countries. (Cubaminrex- Bernama)
