We Are Witnesses of a New Era, Said Venezuela FM at NAM Meeting
CUBA, April 30, 2009. Nicolas Maduro, Venezuela’s foreign minister, said we are witnessing the beginning of a new historical era, which some have called multipolar, in his speech during the ministerial meeting of the NAM Coordinating Bureau concluding today in Havana.
It is an epoch of emerging poles said the head of diplomacy of the Andean country before ministers and top officials from more than 140 attending the meeting.
After learning about the role of Cuba as chair country of the Movement since 2006 and extending greetings on behalf of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez to Fidel and Raul, Maduro said NAM has grown strong enough to generate formulas and new models for a fair and equal restructuring of the international economic order in each region.
He denounced attempts by capitalist powers, which have caused the current economic crises, to restore their economic, financial, political, ideological and moral hegemony through the G-20, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
Two weeks ago member countries of the Bolivarian Alternative of Our Americas together with Ecuador adopted the historic decision of creating a unique regional virtual currency (SUCRE) as the first step towards its own new financial and monetary scheme.
The Venezuelan minister explained that it will allow the group to replace old and unequal trade mechanisms and the use of US dollars as the only payment currency.
In the morning session of the meeting heads of delegations from Honduras, Barbados and Bangladesh also took the floor.
The ministerial meeting of NAM Coordinating Bureau concludes this Thursday following the approval of the Final Statement, which will be used as a starting point in the 15th NAM Summit of Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, scheduled for July 11 to 16. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
