Egypt will Chair a Strengthened Non Aligned Movement, says Cuban FM

CUBA, April 30, 2009. Bruno Rodriguez, Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs, said that Egypt will received the Non Aligned Movement (NAM) strengthened when it assumes its presidency and hosts the 15th Summit of Heads of State and Government, next July.

At a press conference in this capital city, Rodriguez commented that the Ministerial Meeting of NAM´s Coordination Bureau, to wrap up tonight, met everyone´s expectations.

The Cuban Chancellor explained that 142 delegations attended the meeting, including 112 from NAM member countries, which shared constructive and profound debates.

The negotiation of the Final Document was based on a spirit of cooperation, solidarity and joint search for solutions to common problems, added Rodriguez, and announced three special declarations.

One of the documents focuses on the international economic crisis, another on NAM´s support of Zimbabwe´s efforts aimed at economic recovery and a third one on solidarity with Mexico, a country suffering the effects of the Swine Influenza.

As to Cuba´s role as Chair of the Non-Aligned Movement, Rodriguez pointed out that NAM moved forward in meeting strategic guidelines to answer many of the main challenges facing member nations.

Cuba prioritized the consolidation of the revitalization and strengthening of NAM as a group coordinating the policies of South countries, and added that the goals and purposes of the declarations made at the Havana Summit had been achieved.

Rodriguez thanked NAM members for their acknowledgment of Cuba´s performance as Chair of the organization and reaffirmed that the current international urges our countries to keep their unity and solidarity as the key factors to preserve the strength of the organization in the international arena.” (Cubaminrex-ACN)
