Cuban Urges U.S. to Comply with Obligations as U.N. Headquarters .
CUBA, November 12, 2010.- Cuba demanded the United States to meet its obligations as host country of the United Nations so as to avoid incidents that threaten the safety of the Cuban representation to the world organization.
The long-standing history of violent acts against the Cuban Mission and its staff, as well as the permanence of self-confessed terrorists in that country (U.S.) suggest the adoption of as many preventative and dissuasive measures as possible, read a demand presented by the Cuban permanent representative to the U.N. Pedro Nuñez Mosquera.
The document was presented at the Sixth Commission of the General Assembly which analyzed a report by the U.S. Relations Committee, said Prensa Latina news agency.
The diplomat said that during the ongoing year, there have been several incidents that have affected the normal development of diplomatic activities by the Cuban mission before the U.N.
Nuñez Mosquera also denounced irregularities in the fulfillment of the host country’s obligation of timely granting entry visas to diplomatic representatives so that they can attend U.N. meetings in New York or in any other venue within the U.S.
The Cuban diplomat described as a very sensitive issue to Cuba the travel restrictions imposed by Washington to the Cuban mission’s staff.
The U.S. government forbids members of the Cuban mission to travel beyond 25 miles from the Mission’s headquarters that is beyond Colombus Circus (in Manhattan), explained the diplomat.
Cuba reiterated that Washington’s policy to apply travel restrictions to the Cuban diplomats and Cuban-born international officials credited to the U.N. or working with the international organization is unfair, selective and discriminatory, motivated by political reasons.
