Cuba Elected Vice-President of UN Decolonization Committee

CUBA, Feb 26, 2010. - Cuba was elected this Friday, unanimously, to hold a vice
presidency of the Special Committee on the United Nations Organization.

Pedro Nunez Mosquera, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the UN, thanked the appointment and reaffirmed the commitment of his country with the works of that body of the international organization, reported Prensa Latina news agency.

The diplomat expressed that this is a recognition to the permanent position of the Cuban government and people against colonialism and in favor of independence and defense of the sovereignty of nations.

In the meeting, held at the UN headquarters in New York, Saint Lucia was elected president, while Sierra Leone has come to occupy a vice-chairmanship, and Syria, the office of rapporteur.

Also, the countries attending the General Assembly recommended to extend to 29 the number of committee members to accomodate an application for membership made by Nicaragua.

The United Nations celebrates this year the 50th anniversary of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and peoples under colonial domination, a fundamental text of the work of the also known body as the Committee of 24. (Cubaminrex - acn)
