Cuba Slams US and Israeli Policies against Palestine
CUBA, November 30th, 2010.- The Cuban permanent representative to the United Nations, Pedro Nuñez, said that the United States’ veto at the UN Security Council hinders solutions for the Palestinian issue.
According to Prensa Latina news agency, during a speech before the UN General Assembly in New York, Nuñez noted that Israel attacks the Palestinian people with total impunity only because it feels protected by Washington.
He pointed out that the UN Security Council has not been able to seriously tackle the Palestinian issue due to existing double standards and the veto threat by the United States, one of its permanent members.
The Cuban diplomat reaffirmed Cuba’s commitment to achieving a definite solution to this issue, including a just solution to the difficult situation of the Palestinian refugees.
He also condemned the illegal occupation of territories by Israel as the main obstacle to attain a just and long-lasting peace in the Middle East.
Nuñez added that Cuba condemns Israel’s aggressive policy and its total disregard for calls of the international community and UN resolutions demanding the end of its blockade against Gaza.
The Cuban representative expressed Cuba’s rejection of the construction of Israeli settlements in the occupied territories, and noted that these actions are an attempt to change the demographical structure of the Palestinian territory in a sort of de facto annexation.
Nuñez stated that efforts should be made until the Palestinian people are able to enjoy their inalienable rights, including self-determination and sovereignty as an independent State, on the basis of the borders established in 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital. (Cubaminrex - ACN)
