Cuba Urges UN to Advance in Process of Reform of Security Council

CUBA, Jan 21, 2010. - Cuba urged the United Nations to advance in the process to reform its Security Council. The call was made on Wednesday by the island’s Deputy Permanent Representative before the UN General Assembly, Rodolfo Benitez.
According to Prensa Latina news agency, Benitez urged the international community to prevent the negotiations from becoming a reiteration of the fruitless discussions held over this issue during more than 15 years.

He stressed that most of the UN member countries are interested in and they prioritize the reform process, and added that there are many proposals to begin a process of real negotiations.

In spite of several differences, the vast majority agree on something:“the Security Council has to undergo an urgent and deep reform,” the Cuban
official noted.

He stated that there is ample consensus on the idea that a true reform of the United Nations will not be possible without a reform of the Security Council first.

Last December, Cuba asked the United Nations to increase the number of permanent and non-permanent members of the Security Council and to transform its working methods. (Cubaminrex - acn)
