Cuba Condemns in Geneva Israeli Attack on the Liberty Fleet

CUBA, June 2, 2010. Cuba condemned on Wednesday in Geneva the Israeli attack on the so-called Liberty Fleet, which carried humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, with 700 civilians on a pacific mission on board and no weapons.

Cuba’s ambassador to the Swiss diplomatic mission, Rodolfo Reyes, said that the terrible news of a new indiscriminate killing committed by the Israeli army was tackled during the first day of the 14th session of the UN Human Rights Council.

Reyes insisted that the action is a total violation of international law, including the humanitarian international law and human rights, the Prensa Latina news agency reports.

This time, he pointed out, the target of the powerful Israeli military machinery, financed and equipped with the direct support of the United States and the western powers, was the so-called Liberty Fleet.

The attack of the Tel Aviv Navy on Monday caused the death of at least nine people and wounded another 30, according to recent reports.

Reyes called the attention of participants on the seriousness of this action carried out in international waters.

The only sin of the peaceful expedition was to carry some 10,000 tons of aid, which included medical equipment, food, construction materials and essential items, to alleviate the dramatic situation of the population at the Gaza Strip, he pointed out.

He said that an independent international investigation should be carried out, which identifies people responsible of this terrible action and bring them before justice, since the victims and their relatives should receive the necessary and fair reparation.

The Cuban diplomat underlined that the Occupying Power (Israel) should put an end to its policy of economic suffocation and of destruction of the Gaza Strip.

It should lift the blockade, allow for humanitarian aid to get there, and abandon its criminal policies against the Palestinian population, he added.

To conclude, he said that Cuba reaffirms its unlimited support for the Palestinian cause and its noble and legitimate aspiration to establish a free, independent and sovereign State, on the basis of the borders established in 1967, and with East Jerusalem as its capital. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
