Cuba Demands US Lifting of Blockade, Requests Support

HAVANA, Cuba, September 14, 2011. - Cuba demanded on Wednesday the lifting of the US blockade and requested support from the international community to the draft resolution on the issue that will be subject to vote at the UN in October.

Deputy Foreign Minister Abelardo Moreno said the US blockade is a unilateral, immoral policy increasingly rejected worldwide.

At the headquarters of the Foreign Ministry, Moreno presented the Cuban report on the resolution 65/6 of the UN General Assembly "Necessity of Ending the Economic, Commercial and Financial Blockade Imposed by the United States against Cuba."

Last year, the UN General Assembly approved the resolution on the need to put an end to the siege of Cuba, with 187 votes in favour, two against and three abstentions.

In this way, the UN General Assembly ratified its denunciation of a siege maintained for over 50 years that has cost Cuba 975 billion USD.

During his speech, Moreno also referred to the increase of damages of the blockade to child health.

An example is that the oncopediatric service of the Institute of Oncology and Radiobiology has not been able to use extensible prosthesis to replace bone parts in tumor surgery.

Consequently, it has not been possible to apply conservative or functional treatment on children and youngsters affected by malignant tumors of the bones because the said prosthesis are sold by US firms. (Cubaminrex/ Prensa Latina).
