UNICEF: Cuba is the only country in Latin America without child malnutrition.

HAVANA, September 21, 2011.- The last report of United Nations Children´s Fund (UNICEF) entitled Child Development, a Balance on Nutrition, determined there are 146 million children 5 year  of age or less with grave malnutrition problems. According to the document, 28% of these children belongs to Africa, 17% from Middle East, 15% from Asia, 7% from Latin American and the Caribbean, 5% from Central Europe,  and 27% from another developing nations.

Cuba is the only one nation in Latin America and the Caribbean that has eliminated child malnutrition, thanks to the Cuban Government´s efforts to improve nutrition, especially within the most vulnerable groups. Besides, United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has also recognized Cuba as the nation with the most improvements in Latin America in the fight against malnutrition.

The Cuban Government guarantees a basic food basket and promotes the benefits of child breastfeeding.

The United Nations Organization places Cuba in the vanguard of the group of countries that comply with the goals toward human development.

Cuba has achieved this despite 50 years of economic, comercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States. (Cubaminrex/Granma)
