
UNESCO Praises Cuba’s Social Use of Science.
CUBA, November 11, 2010.- The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) praised Cuba’s use of science and technology to satisfy social needs.
In a report released on Wednesday on the occasion of World Science Day for Peace and Development, established by UNESCO in 2001 and celebrated each year on November 10, the UN organization places Cuba among the first countries of the world regarding the use of technology in the production of vaccines and to eradicate preventable diseases.
The document also notes that Latin America has one of highest percentages in the world of women working in science and technology.
“In Cuba, in 2008, 53% of the total of professionals working in the science and technology sector and university graduates that started a scientific career were women,” the report reads.
The document also praises Cuba’s advances in the energy sector, the mitigation of the effects of catastrophes and the modernization of meteorological services.
