Anniversary of Jose Marti's Death Commemorated

CUBA, May 19, 2009. The fall in combat of Cuban national hero Jose Mari, 114 years ago today, was commemorated in the Bosque Martiano (Marti Forest) of Ariguanabo, west of Havana.

The forest is made up of all 54 species of plants mentioned by the national hero in his Campaign Diary and also features a representation of the route followed by Marti after his arrival in Playitas de Cajobabo on April 11, 1895 accompanied by Dominican Maximo Gomez all the way to Dos Rios (120 miles away), where Marti died in combat, 38 days after his landing.

The memorial has 27 wooden stumps marking the camps used by the Cuban troops along the trail. There is an image of Marti wearing campaign clothes, and others depicting the moment when he received the rank of Major General.

On related news, Chilean and Cuban academics highlighted the validity of Marti's ideas during a ceremony in honor of the Cuban national hero organized by the Jose Marti Department of the University of Art and Social Sciences (UARCIS) of Santiago de Chile.

Present in the meeting were Ileana Diaz Arguelles, Cuban ambassador to Chile and UARCIS Rector Carlos Margota, who underlined the need to strengthen the bonds between the two nations and in particular relations between universities of Chile and Cuba and with the rest of higher institutions of Latin America.

UARCIS Vice Rector Nelly Richards, a recipient of Cuba's Order for National Culture, was also invited to the commemoration, which included an exhibit on the life and work of Jose Marti. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
