Cubans Mark Birth Anniversary of Jose Marti

Cubans Mark Birth Anniversary of Jose Marti CUBA, January 28, 2009. With a political-cultural ceremony and military honors at the Jose Marti Mausoleum in this eastern city, the people of Santiago in representation of the entire Cuban nation, paid homage Wednesday to Marti on the 156 anniversary of his birth.

Floral wreaths sent from Cuban leader Fidel Castro, President Raul Castro, the Councils of State and Ministers and others were placed by the tomb where Marti's remains are kept at the Santa Ifigenia cemetery of this city.

Throughout the day outstanding cadets of the Military Technical Institute of Havana and students of the Camilo Cienfuegos military school of Ciego de Avila are keeping a special honor guard to the Cuban national hero.

The occasion also served to commemorate the founding of the Cuban Workers Confederation (CTC) on January 28, 1939.

Leaders of the Communist Party and the Youth Communist League participated in the ceremony as well as members of the Ministry of Interior, workers and students.
The tribute included a children’s parade accompanied by a rhythmic band and a costume contest where the kids dressed up like the characters of Jose Marti's stories for children.

In a related activity, children and young people from the province of Granma took white roses to a monument to Marti in Dos Rios, where he died in combat on May 19, 1895. They camped the night before near the area where he fell and toured the place where he spent the last 10 days of his life.

In Dos Rios, Jose Marti wrote important documents including an unfinished letter that is considered his political testament. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
