Cubans Recall Jose Marti with a Special Ceremony in Dos Rios

CUBA, May 19, 2010. Thousands of people, especially youngsters and children, participated in the main ceremony to pay tribute to Cuba’s National Hero Jose Marti, who died in combat 115 years ago today in this spot of the municipality of Jiguani.

The ceremony began at 5:00 p.m.Wednesday in front of the obelisk that marks the place where the national hero, with the rank of Major General, was gunned down on May 19, 1895, while fighting against the Spanish colonialist troops.

Participating in the tribute to the brilliant politician, thinker, poet, journalist, essayist, translator and orator were mainly students from all educational levels, and also workers, farmers and combatants from various generations, according to information provided by the organizers.

They added that the pioneer children that won the 2010 fine arts competition for children called De donde crece la palma, and of the contest entitled Reading Marti, were also present in the meeting, along with experts on the life and work of the Cuban hero.

During the ceremony’s cultural gala, the Cuban music group Buena Fe premiered its song Todo el mundo cuenta, inspired in the National Hero’s thinking, and will offer a concert tonight at the aforementioned open area.

Since yesterday, primary and junior high school students camping in the area have been meeting with historians to know more about Marti, and have carried out competitions of pioneer children and an artistic gala.

The film Jose Marti, el ojo del canario, by Fernando Perez, on the childhood and adolescence of the Cuban patriot, will be presented on Wednesday in the city of Bayamo, the cradle of the National Anthem, where the conspiracy that sparked the country’s independence wars took place.

The Cuban committee of Marti institutions will carry out, until May 28, a cycle of conferences, exhibitions, round tables and book launchings, among other activities, to recall the author of the Golden Age throughout the island.

Born in Havana on January 28, 1853, Jose Marti is considered to be among the most acute thinkers of all time, and his ideas are one of the ideological pillars of the Cuban socialist revolution. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
