Cubans Pay Tribute to Marti at Santiago’s Mausoleum

CUBA, May 19, 2010. With flowers, songs and military honors, Santiago de Cuba residents paid tribute to National Hero Jose Marti, at the mausoleum where the mortal remains of this patriot, who fell in combat 115 years ago, are placed.

Thousands of pioneer children, students, combatants of the Revolution, soldiers and workers participated in the ceremony at the mausoleum, where wreaths sent by Revolution leader Fidel Castro and President Raul Castro, the councils of State and Ministers, and the people, were laid.

Midshipmen from the Granma Naval Academy and students from the Camilo Cienfuegos Military School from the Havana municipality of Arroyo Arenas carried out a special guard of honor on the occasion, along with the detachment that permanently guards that sacred place for the Cuban nation.

"Penas", a patriotic poem by Marti set to music by Beatriz Corona, opened the ceremony, performed by the Santiago Choral Society.

During his speech, Mariano Baños, member of the Cuban Communist Party’s provincial bureau, highlighted the political and humane stature Jose Marti, considered the most universal of all Cubans.

He forged Cuba’s independence and left an ideological and ethical legacy that directed the destiny of successive generations, said Baños, to then refer to his anti-imperialist and pro-Latin American vocation, and of commitment to mankind.

Marti anticipated the danger posed by the United States, stressed the speaker, adding that with his inspiring patriotism and his example he guides the Revolution, which, since 1959, made his ideas come true.

The ceremony was presided over by Lazaro Exposito, member of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party and its first secretary in this province, as well as by leaders from the government and high officers from the Revolutionary Armed Forces.
