Culture Minister Abel Prieto Praises Education of Marti in Cuba

CUBA, May 20, 2010. Cuban Culture Minister Abel Prieto praised in this eastern city the country’s education program, for taking the ideas of Cuba’s National Hero Jose Marti (1853-1895) as a guide.

Prieto, also a Politburo member of the Cuban Communist Party, made a statement to the press on Wednesday, after touring the 15th National Children’s Fine Arts Hall (De donde crece la palma), at the Benito Granda Gallery.

He affirmed that there’s no educational proposal more exceptional than that of Cuba, inspired in the solidarity and the humanist, educated and revolutionary conception of Marti, who fell in combat on May 19, 1895, in the plains of Dos Rios, in the municipality of Jiguani.

He’s a contemporary of ours, and all the challenges education on the island is facing today go through his legacy, he pointed out.

He gave as an example the contest De donde crece la palma, first convened by the Benito Granda Gallery and then turned into a national event, to the point that its 15th edition had the record participation of over half a million students, he underlined.

The Minister said that he appreciated pieces at the Hall that are both experimental and genuine, a reflection of an approach to the National Hero in an imaginative way and coming from the deepest feelings of children.

He pointed out that it’s something beautiful and the expression of the work of art
instructors at schools, that wonderful idea of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, he stressed.

Prieto closed in Dos Ríos the main ceremony held in the country on the occasion of the 115th anniversary of the fall in combat of Jose Marti, considered the most universal of all Cuban thinkers, the ideas of which are one of the pillars of the island’s socialist revolution.  (Cubaminrex- ACN)
