Latin America, and especially Cuba, commemorates the 28th of January as the birthday of one of its most illustrious sons: José Martí, the national independence hero whose patriotic, anti-imperialist and human thoughts represent the essence of the Cuban Revolution.
The "purist of human beings" as the Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral called him, dedicated his life and work to struggle for the independence of Cuba and America and already foresaw in the 19th century the danger the United States would present for the American continent.
The anti-imperialism, the patriotism and the humanity that are present in the Cuban revolution are inspired by Martí's thoughts. The Cuban President, Fidel Castro points out that "José Martí is and will be the eternal guide of our people. His legacy will never expire" Since its triumph in 1959 the Cuban revolution has been everything the Apostle fought for. The land was given to the peasants by the Agrarian Land Reform Law and the Literacy campaign began a whole program of education and instruction.
Furthermore, the thoughts and actions of José Martí and Fidel Castro are inextricably linked. The Cuban revolution, led by Fidel Castro, has achieved the ideal of Jose Marti: the country is everybody's and for the good of all.
And so it can be affirmed without fear of being contradicted, that Cuba actually lives the process and, what it is known as the Battle of Ideas has its roots and its essence in the Martí ideology. Serious socio-economic transformations having been taking place in the country over the last six years, which have brought a better way of life for the people.
The National Cuban hero always defended access to education as the measure to be truly free and the Revolution, loyal adherent to his thoughts, is actually developing an educational revolution, to raise even more the cultural level of every citizen with access to the new technologies of the time.
Health, culture and other spheres are all included in this process that seeks to deepen the policies of social justice and equality. This is why we offer this day to the life of Jose Marti.
Martí revolutionary energy came from love and love fills the work of the Revolution that for all these years has lifted its voice to defend the rights of the poor of the earth.
Since its triumph 47 years ago, the Cuban Revolution has given its hand in solidarity to the Latin American people and has denounced the expansionist plans of the United States. José Martí had already warned us about this powerful neighbour that doesn't want to recognise us and completely disregards our wishes.
