VP Esteban Lazo Signs Book of Condolences in Memory of Rev. Lucius Walker

CUBA, September 9th, 2010.- The Vice President of the Cuban Council of State, Esteban Lazo Hernandez, signed on Wednesday a book of condolences in memory of Reverend Lucius Walker, the leader of the US foundation Pastors for Peace.

During a solemn ceremony at the venue of the Cuban Friendship Institute (ICAP) in Havana, Lazo praised the moral values of this close friend of Cuba who passed away in New York earlier this week.

“I met Lucius as a great fighter, as a friend of Cuba and Fidel (Castro). We met him as a man committed to the struggle against the US blockade of Cuba,” said Lazo and added that Lucius was a true advocate of peace with clear ideas, very brave and a person who acted according to his ideals in defense of human beings.

“He died but he will live on as an example for humanity, an example of how a man should be in these times,” Lazo pointed out.

Also present were the head of the Office for Religious Affairs at the Central Committee of Cuba’s Communist Party (PCC), Caridad Diego Bello; ICAP’s First VP Enrique Roman; and the head of the Foreign Relations Department of the PCC’s Central Committee, Jorge Marti Martinez.

Reverend Lucius Walker was one of the founders, in 1967, of the Inter-religious Foundation for Community Organization (IFCO), of which he was the Executive Director, and was the Associate General Secretary of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the United States from 1973 through 1978.

Since the early 1990s, he worked tirelessly with IFCO/Pastors for Peace to put an end to the US economic blockade of Cuba bringing humanitarian aid to the Cuban people by way of Friendship Caravans and construction brigades. Heading the US-Cuba Friendshipment Caravans he visited the island every year. (Cubaminrex - ACN)
