Cuba Holds Terry Fox Marathon of Hope.
By Dayami Interián García
CUBA, 21 March 2011.- Tourists and workers in the northern Cuban cays of Jardines del Rey honored Terry Fox, a young Canadian admired for his battle to beat cancer.
In solidarity with cancer patients worldwide, citizens from different countries ran along the main avenue of Cayo Coco (Coco Cay) to honor and remember the 20-year-old Canadian who died of cancer.
Fox has become a symbol for Canadians and all who suffer from that terrible disease, Arthur Wenk, a Toronto resident, told Prensa Latina.
"This is the first time I am participating in the Marathon of Hope in Cuba. I had the privilege of accompanying Terry in the race he organized in Canada," he said.
It is a legacy that will remain for posterity. Terry Fox marathons are held every year in about 50 countries, and are also intended to encourage a healthy lifestyle.
The Terry Fox run has become a popular event and a symbol of friendship between the Cuban and Canadian peoples.
The funds raised in the marathon at the Jardines del Rey tourism resort will be allocated for cancer research, it was announced. (Cubaminrex-PL)
