Cuba grants Friendship Medal to US activists: official.

CUBA, May 3, 201.- Cuban Parliament President Ricardo Alarcon, and the secretary General of the Cuban Workers Union, Salvador Valdes Mesa, granted on Monday the “Friendship Medal” to Rosemarie Mealy and Gloria La Riva, members of the U.S. National Committee for the Free the Cuban Five.

The Council of State of the Republic of Cuba, at the request of the Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples, granted the distinction to the two fighters for justice and solidarity in the United States, for their relentless efforts on behalf of the Cuban Five - Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino and Rene Gonzalez, unfairly incarcerated in US jails for protecting their people from the attacks constantly “hatched” by anti-Cuban organizations based in south Florida.  

Mealy, one of the personalities honored, told ACN she felt "overcome with emotion" for receiving this tribute from a country she admires and with which she’s politically committed.

 This acknowledgement, she added, is a new incentive to continue the struggle in US territory to achieve the indispensable release of the five Cuban and the end of the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the White House on the people of Cuba.

The tribute took place at Havana’s Convention Center, within the framework of the International Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba, held in May every year and convened by the Cuban Workers Union. (Cubaminrex-RHC)
