Frei Betto Asserts Basic Rights are guaranteed in Cuba.

CUBA, June 30, 2011.- Brazilian theologian and writer Frei Beto asserted in Brasilia that the 11 million Cubans living on the Caribbean island have their basic rights guaranteed, like food, health, education and life, one of the most important.

While participating in the seminar “The Cuban Revolution, 52 years later...,” organized by several left parties and trade unions, the intellectual dedicated his speech to the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters incarcerated in the United States since 1998, the Prensa Latina news agency reported.

He went into detail on the case of Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Gerardo Hernandez, Rene Gonzalez and Ramon Labañino, who were submited to a judicial farce in Miami and condemned to harsh sentences ranging from 15 years to two life imprisonments plus 15 years.

He stated that these patriots were monitoring the activities of Florida-based terrorist groups who organized violent actions against Cuba.

Betto recounted the island’s difficult economic situation in recent times, due, among other factors, to the US blockade, the increase of prices on the international market, and the 16 hurricanes that passed through the country in a decade, some of them very destructive.

Closing the panel, chaired by Brazilian Senator Cristovam Buarque, was Manoel Dias, general secretary of the Democratic Labor Party, who declared himself to be in favor of strengthening bonds with the Caribbean nation.

This seminar concluded the cycle of debates carried out in Brazil on Cuban reality, an analysis that had begun the previous Friday in Sao Paulo and that continued on Monday in Rio de Janeiro, followed by meetings held at the Chamber of Deputies and at the National University of Brasilia.

Standing out in these meetings were solidarity with the cause of The Cuban Five, the interest taken in knowing more details about the process of economic updating of the socialist model, and the demand for the US to put an end to the blockade against Cuba. (Cubaminrex-ACN)
