Statement of Solidarity of the National Federation of Labor Unions (NAFLU-KMU) of Philipines
We, the trade union delegates under the National Federation of Labor Union (NAFLU)-Kilusang Mayo Uno, Kilusang Mayo Uno Labor Center, allied trade union organizations, guests, friends and supporters of the Cuban people gathered here today for the National Convention and 50th anniversary commemoration of NAFLU-KMU from June 3-5, 2007at the Benguet State University, convey our strong solidarity with the Cuban people .
We are indeed glad and we congratulate the Cuban people for their country’s progress in many ways – the internationally known health and education systems, great advance in biotechnology and the positive economic growth rate of Cuba among others. This is happening in spite of US economic blockade and US hostile policy against Cuba since the Cuban Revolution won in 1959.
We join the outrage of the peoples of the world against the decision of the regime of Bush last April 19, 2007 to release Luis Posada Carriles a notorious international terrorist who have committed heinous crimes against humanity, one of these is the blowing up of the civilian plane Cubana de Aviacion off the coast of Barbados on October 6,1976, 31 years ago which killed 73 innocent civilians. He was also involved in other crimes like the Bay of Pigs invasion, Iran-Contra scandal, the 1997 bombing of the tourist resorts in Havana, assassination attempts against Fidel Castro, Operation Condor, the torture and murder of Venezuelan citizens, crimes against Nicaragua to name a few.
We strongly denounce the continued detention of the 5 Cuban heroes - Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzales, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino and Rene Gonzales, who will be serving their 9th year in US prisons on September 12, 2007. The Five were jailed for preventing terrorist attacks on Cuba by the anti-Cuba terrorists in Miami.
It is the height of cynicism for the Bush regime to force governments worldwide to implement his policy against “war on terror”, blacklisting progressive leaders of peoples and liberation movements as terrorists and the imprisonment of the 5 Cuban heroes who were fighting against terrorism, while releasing from prison a known international terrorist. It is not surprising however, considering that Posada Carriles’ terrorist career was in the service of the CIA when it was then headed by George Bush Sr. Thereafter, the succeeding US governments have supported his terrorist career. He knows too many secrets as an agent of the US special services and releasing him hopefully would keep those secrets hidden.
We demand an end to the U.S. Economic blockade, the longest-running and most ruthless ever known to mankind which caused the suffering of the Cuban people. We denounce the Bush Plan for the annexation of Cuba which will further intensify the acts of aggression against Cuba. The U.S. regime of Bush is putting pressure on the European Union to prevent the Group of 27 from adopting an independent foreign policy on Cuba. Bush even sent Mc Carry, the US designated pro-consul for implementing the Bush Plan to Europe just last month. Mc Carry, the equivalent of the U.S. administrator for the occupation forces in Iraq Paul Bremer, was booed and denounced in every country he visited by the broad Cuba solidarity movements in those countries.
For us, Cuba remains an inspiration. Its international solidarity with the peoples of the world is well-known and very much appreciated. Many poor countries have benefited from the expertise of Cuban doctors and teachers. The victims of the typhoon in the Philippines received a donation of medicines early this year worth US$20,000.00 from Cuba. We express deep appreciation to the Cuban government for the assistance in spite of US economic blockade and other difficulties.
We resolve to develop mutual solidarity between the Filipino and Cuba peoples.
We resolve to actively involve in the solidarity campaign for Cuba and the Free the Cuban 5 and will organize chapters in factories, agricultural farms, regions and communities where we have unions and allied organizations as well as in places where there are no unions or organizations so we can reach out to more people who will be organized around Cuban solidarity.
We will do this in cooperation with the Philippines-Cuba Friendship Association or AMISTAD and the Free the Cuban 5 Committee.
No to US blockade against Cuba! No to the BUSH PLAN for Cuba!
Free the Cuban 5!
No to US imperialist aggression against Cuba!
Long live the solidarity between the Cuban and Filipino working class!
Long live the solidarity between the Cuban and Filipino peoples!
Down with imperialism!
