Friendship between Cuba and Ecuador: Stronger than Ever Before

CUBA, May 24, 2010. Edgar Ponce, ambassador from the Republic of Ecuador to Cuba, affirmed on Monday in this capital that the bonds of friendship and solidarity between the two nations are stronger than ever.

After placing a wreath at Havana’s Parque de la Fraternidad by the bust of the national hero of Ecuador’s struggle for independence, Abdón Calderón, who fell during the Battle of Pichincha 188 years ago today, Ponce told ACN that Cubans represent the dawn of hope for the peoples.

He affirmed that the Association of South American Nations (UNASUR) and the Bolivarian Alliance for The Americas (ALBA) contribute to integration in the continent.

Participating in the ceremony were representatives from the diplomatic corps accredited to Havana and officials from the Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples.

Prior to the ceremony, a wreath was placed by the monument to Eloy Alfaro, located on Presidentes Avenue, in Vedado neighborhood, in the presence of a group of Ecuadoreans intellectuals and academicians.

Sparing no sacrifices, Abdón Calderón devoted himself to struggle for his country’s freedom, and in spite of having received four bullet wounds in the Battle of Pichincha, he preferred to stay on the firing line, encouraging his own to give of their best and achieve victory.(Cubaminrex- ACN)
