CUBA, March 22, 2011.- Hailing from Ghent, Belgium, 28 friends of Cuba join forces to restore a home for the elderly, damaged by recent hurricanes, in this western Cuban city.
In addition to directly participating in the construction work, the members of the Carlos Habré Brigade donated labor instruments and materials necessary for the rehabilitation of the health center, established to serve more than one hundred senior people.
With local experts, the group repairs one of the rooms designed to accommodate single elderly and others whose families are unable to take care of.
The visit was preceded by efforts to raise funds in Belgium and promote actions in defense of the Caribbean nation, the head of the group Mark Wuytack told Prensa Latina .
The Belgian contingent leader said that the solidarity actions are supported by institutions and individuals in Ghent and in other neighboring cities.
"There, we have also organized talks and other information meetings in support of the international campaign for the release of five Cubans arbitrarily imprisoned in the United States," he added.
"We want to continue voluntary work, most members of the Carlos Habré Brigade want to return in 2012. We may begin to support a project related to children," said Wuytack.
"We appreciate the efforts of this country to provide medical care for all and move forward despite financial constraints and resources, that’s why we're here, we are Cuba," he said. (Cubaminrex-PL)
