US Citizens Who Challenged Blockade of Cuba Return to America
WASHINGTON, August 6, 2009. A group of US citizens who traveled to Cuba challenging the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on the island since 1962, have returned to their country.
The nearly 140 members of the Venceremos Brigade, an organization that for 40 years has advocated solidarity with the Cuban people, crossed the Canadian border on foot through a checkpoint in the City of Buffalo.
The activists, who were wearing orange shirts, told the press that they will continue to support a change of the hostile policy of the White House towards Cuba.
Before leaving to Cuba on July, the group sent a letter to President Barack Obama informing him of the itinerary of their trip.
In the letter they said they would return on August 3rd, without the consent of the US government, challenging the travel restrictions and the economic blockade imposed on that country for almost five decades.
The members of the brigade said these measures were not only inhumane, but a failure, and ratified their support for Cuba.
They also expressed their hopes regarding a change of bilateral relations between the two countries, which should begin with a less aggressive attitude of the White House.
The students, teachers, social workers, medical professionals, lawyers and community leaders comprising the group could be subjected to sanctions for having challenged the blockade. (Cubaminrex- Granma)
