Frei Betto Extols Efforts of the Cuban People

CUBA, June 9, 2010. “Cubans have the right to move on in their efforts to build a people in solidarity, a happy people”, said on Wednesday Frei Betto at the Marti International Colloquium underway in this capital, during a special presentation on ethics.

“In spite of being an island, of being the only socialist country in the western hemisphere, of suffering a criminal US blockade, and of being an orphan of the collapse of the Soviet Union, Cuba resists,” said the Brazilian intellectual and theologian during the first session of the Colloquium, called Jose Marti: for a Culture of Nature, which is attended by over 300 delegates from 30 nations and that will run until Friday.

Betto referred to the disastrous consequences of social inequality and the accumulation of wealth, since 10 per cent of the wealthiest people in the world have a little over 70 per cent of the world’s riches in their hands, which he described as a crime against humanity.

During his speech, he also said that the meeting is also aimed at finding new formulas for old concepts, which can contribute to build a better world.

Likewise, he referred to the need of encouraging new ethical values, in which love towards our fellow men is paramount. (Cubaminrex- ACN)
