Call for France to Open up Respectful Links with Cuba

FRANCE, July 14, 2010.- Politicians and intellectuals called on France to open up to Cuba, ending the interventionist common position of the European Union (EU) and establish fluid and respectful cooperation links with the Island, Prensa Latina reported.

During a question with the French foreign minister, Bernard Kouchner, MP Jean Jacques Candelier urged the Government to coordinate with the Spanish diplomacy to normalize ties between the EU and Cuba.

In two articles published, the French writer and journalist Danielle Beiltrach expressed the same feeling, while taking up the theme of the Cuban anti-terrorist fighters imprisoned in U.S. jails.

Beiltrach noted that while mass media campaigns do not lose the habit of trying to distort the image of Cuba, and the five prisoners, wrongly convicted, in the United States are denied the most basic rights.

She referred to the delaying tactics or total disability of the families to visit Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino and René González, the Five, imprisoned for preventing terrorist acts against their country.

On the other hand, the author, as well as the charitable associations France-Cuba and CubaSíFrance stressed that Cuba is a country under constant pressure from the economic, commercial and financial center of Washington.

More than 50 years of heroic resistance have shown the strong character of the Cuban Revolution. It is time for the world to change its position and normalize its relations with an island, an example of independence and sovereignty, they pointed out. (Cubaminrex – Granma)
