VIII National Meeting in Solidarity with Cuba was held in Kingston.

JAMAICA, November 22, 2010.- With the second largest attendance over the past four years, this Saturday, November 20, the VIII National Meeting in Solidarity with Cuba was held in Kingston, at the Confederation of Trade Unions headquarters.

This important event was attended by Ambassador Yuri Gala Lopez, Head of the Cuban State Mission in this country; ICAP representative, Yamil Martinez and members of the Solidarity Movement who reside in various parishes of the country. Among the groups attending the event were the Jamaica-Cuba Friendship Association (Kingston, Portland and Westmoreland Chapters), the “FRIENDS OF CUBA”, “VENCEREMOS”, “YESCUBA” groups, members of the PNPYO and the Jamaica-Cuba Alumni Association (JCAA), and others.

It is worth highlighting the presence of Parliamentarian Donald Rhodd and PNP Vice-president, Angela Brown-Burke. Also present, representing the Cuban Embassy, were Minister Counselor Micaela Ramirez and Counselor Marcial Melian.

During the meeting, the attendees, on behalf of the spectrum making up the solidarity movement in the country, discussed organizational issues and mentioned the activities carried out by the different solidarity groups during this year 2010. This was the topic of a passionate debate among the participants who agreed and outlined new goals for 2010. Special emphasis was placed on the unjust economic war against the Cuban people, the misinformation campaigns against Cuba and the release of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters unjustly imprisoned in North American soil. The screening of the documentary made by American actor Danny Glover, in which he calls for greater actions to free the Five, had a strong impact on the participants.

Both ICAP representative Yamil Martinez and Ambassador Yuri Gala took the floor at the meeting, an opportunity they availed of to make reference to the case of the Five Heroes, the International Colloquium on the issue, held in Holguin, the unjust and illegal U.S. blockade, and the need to continue to face the media campaigns against Cuba.  Likewise, they both thanked the actions undertaken by the solidarity groups in the period under examination and urged them to continue to contribute to strengthen the friendly and cooperative ties existing between Jamaica and Cuba.

As a result of the discussions in this National Meeting, three important resolutions were adopted, to wit: a first one that condemns the U.S. blockade against Cuba, second one which rejects the unjust media campaigns against Cuba, and the third one which demands the immediate release of our Five Heroes. At the meeting, a consensus to send these resolutions to the VI International Colloquium on the Five that presently in session in Holguin was reached. Those documents will also be sent to Jamaican leading newspapers. (Cubaminrex-Embacuba Jamaica)
