DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, March 25, 2011.- The Autonomous University of Santo Domingo celebrated the 116th anniversary of the Montecristi Manifesto with a wreath-laying at the bust of Cuban National Hero Jose Marti.
Rector Mateo Aquino Febrillet highlighted Jose Marti's strong ties with the Dominican Republic, embodied in his close friendship with Maximo Gomez, a Dominican hero.
Febrillet also noted the ties between Marti and Federico Hernandez y Carvajal, and his three visits to the Dominican Republic to strengthen ties between the two countries, which are stronger than ever.
Cuban Ambassador Juan Astuasaran highlighted the historic magnitude of the Montecristi Manifesto, signed in that city on March 25. The document charted the foundations, ideals and course of the second war for Cuba's independence, which had begun a few days earlier, and was championed by General Maximo Gomez until the end.
