President Colom Praises Cuba-Guatemala Relations.

Guatemala, April 4, 2011.- The president of Guatemala, Alvaro Colom, labelled as "excellent" his country’s relations with Cuba and thanked the support provided by the island to Guatemala's candidacy for a non-permanent seat on UN Security Council.

In exclusive statements to Radio Havana Cuba, Colom thanked Cuban solidarity: We are deeply grateful to the Cuban people and government for supporting Guatemala's candidacy to UN Security Council membership, which became the candidacy of Latin America and the Caribbean. An aspiration we expect to attain."

Furthermore he said, “Cuban cooperation is key for Guatemala, because it brings strong and concrete results,” and recalled that some 162,000 Guatemalans have benefited so far form Cuban medical aid. He also noted that the Cuban literacy program “Yes I can” has freed 11 municipalities from illiteracy in Guatemala.

During his Cuba visit in 2009, Alvaro Colom conferred a distinction to Fidel Castro and apologized for the training in Guatemalan territory by the US of the mercenaries who later attacked Cuba in 1961’s Bay of Pigs invasion. (Cubaminrex-RHC)
