ECUADOR, May 16, 2011.- The Ecuadorean journalist, combatant and revolutionary, Carlos Bastidas, who was murdered during the Batista dictatorship received tribute in Ecuador, and the 50th anniversary of Radio Havana Cuba was also honored.
President of the Ecuadorean Solidarity Coordinator, José Regato, noted in an interview that Bastidas was known in those times through Radio Rebelde as Atahualpa Recio and was murdered after meeting with Fidel for an interview in the Sierra Maestra.
The first tribute was paid in Milagro, where the martyr was born, with the unveiling of an allegorical mural in front of the city hall and the creation of a committee to build a monument in his honor.
Vice-director of Radio Havana Cuba, Pedro Martínez, Cuban embassy counselor, Basilio Gutiérrez, Montgomery Sánchez, Machala Mayor, Francisco Asán, Cuban ambassador, Jorge Rodríguez and rectors of Milagro University and Mejia Institute, as well as Carlos’ brother, Edmundo Bastidas, participated in the celebrations held at Mejia National Institute, then in Machala and in Milagro.
During the events, hundreds of people expressed their solidarity with the Cuban revolution, condemned the U.S. blockade against the island for more than 50 years and claimed for the liberation of the Cuban Five.
The ashes of this combatant remain in Cuban soil, as his relatives desired for being an example of solidarity. (Cubaminrex-RHC)
