Cuba Ratifies Sanction Against Terrorist Chavez Abarca.

Havana, Cuba, May 23, 2011.- The Court for offences against state security of the People’s Supreme Court upheld the sanction of 30 years prison against Salvadoran Francisco Antonio Chavez Abarca for the crime of terrorism.

The judges considered that during the trial proceedings the formalities and guarantees of the accused in the exercise of the right to defense were completed and dismissed the appeal for annulment.

The decision of the Court was based on solid and sufficient material evidence confirming Chavez Abarca's responsibility, according to a statement released by Cubadebate website.

It was also stated that the extreme seriousness and background of Chavez Abarca in terrorist activity merited the 30 year sentence, a necessary and just punishment.

Abundant forensic evidence, documents and testimonies showing the terrorist acts carried out and supervised by Chavez Abarca to plant bombs in Cuban tourist facilities were presented during the hearing, held in December.

It was also proved that Chavez Abarca recruited, trained, organized and financed Guatemalans and Salvadorans who traveled to Cuba in the 1990s to install explosive devices, as he previously did. Chavez Abarca was leader of an armed group in Central America organized by the terrorist Luis Posada Carriles and the Cuban-American National Foundation with the intent to cause death, pain and destruction in Cuba, to create a climate of insecurity, panic and terror that affects the population and the tourism industry.
