More Irregularities in Trial of Terrorist Luis Posada Carriles.
CUBA, March 3rd, 2011.- Irregularities continue to arise in the trial for perjury, obstruction of justice and migratory fraud of international and self-confessed terrorist Luis Posada Carriles in El Paso, Texas.
After two days of interruption, the process resumed on Wednesday, but —for almost an hour— the audience had to leave the courtroom at the request of the attorneys who asked to speak with Judge Kathleen Cardone in private, Prensa Latina news agency reports.
The trial had been put off on Monday when a defense attorney claimed to have family problems and a jury member was sick.
Jose Pertierra, a lawyer who represents Venezuela in its extradition request against Luis Posada Carriles, said the trial has been put off on five occasions for different reasons: first because of snow, then because of cold temperature and strong winds, and also for certain legal skirmishes by the lawyers.
“At this pace, we will be at El Paso for a while,” Pertierra said.
Among other crimes, Posada Carriles was the mastermind of the downing of a Cuban airliner in 1976 —which left 73 people dead— and of a 1997 series of bomb attacks against Cuban hotels and tourist facilities that left one Italian tourist dead and several people wounded. (Cubaminrex-Cuban News Agency)
