The Trial of Posada Carriles: A Remake of the Godfather?.
By Marcos Alfonso
The biased and delayed process against terrorist Luis Posada Carriles makes us remember the Mario Puzzo classic, “The Godfather”.
The report by Associated Press (AP) is a good example: “the US government will not attempt to put him in jail for a long period of time” (said the assassin to the press) and “expects, according to the same source, that what he knows on the US intervention in Latin America will protect him”.
Such insolence reminds us of the meeting of the five most powerful mafia families in the US attempting to agree on peace on the basis that Don Vito Corleone give in and facilitate “his contacts” to US Representatives and other government officials under his control in order for the so called “under world” to continue his fearful terror.
In Havana, meanwhile, another terrorist, Francisco Chavez Abarca confessed during his trial late last year and made public on Cuban television that who recruited him to plan and execute the terrorist actions in 1997 was Luis Posada Carriles.
Chavez Abarca was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his crimes. However, his chief, terrorist Posada Carriles will be tried for lying to US federal authorities on immigration issues. His long list of assassinations, terrorist actions, prison escape and other types of crimes do not matter…they do not exist.
This tropical “godfather”, born in the southern province of Cienfuegos, Cuba on February 15th, 1928 and who responds to his official name of Luis Clemente Faustino Posada Carriles or alias: Basilio, Comisario and Bambi…is a veteran of the Central Intelligence Agency, was a collaborator for the secret service of the Batista dictatorship and had close ties to FBI figures during the 1950’s.
According to Prensa Latina News Agency, Brian Becker, Director of US ANSWER Coalition accused Washington of hypocritically preparing the migratory trial for Posada Carriles when he should have been judged for his terrorist history.
Other sources believe that Posada should respond for his terrorist actions. “Posada Carriles has a lot of information and that is a very serious problem for the United States”, said Becker.
In his criminal history, Posada killed 73 people on board the Cubana Airliner that exploded in midair after take off from Barbados in 1976 as well as escaping from a Venezuelan prison where he was serving time for his crime.
Other charges against Posada are the bombings of tourism installations in Havana in 1997 killing a young Italian tourist Fabio Di Celmo.
The list of crimes includes several assassination attempts against the leader of the Revolution Fidel Castro which included the explosion of an area of the University of Panama where hundreds of people were to be found at the time.
Like the times of Don Corleone, the affairs of Posada Carriles have always been handled at levels above the Department of Justice. As said attorney Jose Pertierra, who represents Venezuela in the extradition request of the assassin and who has just been threatened to death said: “I believe it has been discussed by powerful sectors in Washington, White House and CIA”.
We cannot rule out that Bambi is a CIA man, confessed by himself and his attorney. It is also found in declassified documents…but there are too many interests at stake for this assassin to be tried for anything more serious than a simple immigration issue. (Cubamnirex-Cuban News Agency)
