Argentina Awards Cuban Ambassador

Buenos Aires, Dec 21, 2005. (Prensa Latina) The government of Argentina accorded Cuba´s Ambassador to Argentina Alejandro Gonzalez Galiano the Order of Liberator, Grand Cross Level, the highest distinction awarded to a foreign personage.

In the San Martin Palace ceremony, foreign ministry headquarters, Roberto Garcia Moritan, assistant Foreign Relations minister, did the honors to Gonzalez in recognition of the great value of his five years of work here.

His important work was characterized by relevant steps in reactivating bilateral political relations, including the visit of President Fidel Castro in May 2003.

He also referred to Gonzalez´ role in the important cooperation agreements signed during the respective visits of former Chancellor Rafael Bielsa to Cuba and Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque to Buenos Aires.

Garcia Moritan pointed out that present relations are based on historic ties, notably Cuban independence hero Jose Marti, who served as consul for Argentina in the US, the "inevitable" impact over the years of the Cuban Revolution on young Argentineans, and Cuba´s support for Argentine sovereignty of the Malvinas Islands (Falklands).

Gonzalez Galiano accepted the Jose de San Martin honor in the name of the Cuban government and people and recognized "with infinite gratitude" the extraordinary solidarity between the Argentine and Cuban people.

He said he had faith that, like Cubans move forward every day despite their difficulties, Argentineans would advance on their road to genuine Latin American integration.
