Caracas, May 25 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Parliament President Ricardo Alarcon urged the US on Wednesday to whether extradite Luis Posada Carriles to Venezuela or try him for terrorist acts, rather than minor charges.
Alarcon, who began today a visit to this country to attend a bilateral Inter-parliamentary meeting, explained that Washington is a signer of the Montreal Convention that stipulates that crimes against civil aviation must be sanctioned.
If for any reason, a state cannot extradite the responsible party of such a criminal act, then he must be tried there as if it had been a sabotage against a US airliner, as stipulated in article 7 of the convention, the Cuban official told Venezuelan TV.
In the case he is extradited to Venezuela, the US government would be accomplishing international agreements, and should provide all the evidence it has concealed for years, he noted.
Alarcon also affirmed The Montreal Convention rules out the possibility of extraditing Posadas to another country, alluding to rumors he would be taken to El Salvador to be tried for minor charges of using fake documents.
Early this month, Posada´s extradition was requested by Venezuela, where he escaped from jail in 1985 after evading a trial for sabotage of the Cubana airliner in 1976.
However,
US authorities announced that on June 13, a court will analyze the Posada
case for violation of migration laws, which Venezuelan authorities consider
a move to evade the extradition request.
