Cuba-CARICOM Summit Underway

Bridgetown, Dec 6, 2005. (Prensa Latina) Cuba and the Caribbean Communities (CARICOM) nations are readying a wide agenda to secure success of the II Summit, considered a milestone in bilateral relations before holding it in Barbados.

Deputy Ministers and officials from the 15 CARICOM member countries and Cuba are reviewing at Hilton hotel their key issues before submitting them to the region´s Foreign ministers and leaders´ consideration.

Strengthening of economic and commercial links in health, culture and education are among the prioritized topics of this meeting, whose highest part is scheduled for Wednesday.

The II Summit also aims at monitoring agreements of Havana 2002, the first edition, which recognized the mutual decision to boost a biggest regional integration.

Cuba-CARICOM relations are marked by this community´s support of the island´s positions in the international arena, especially in its fight against the US blockade.

UN Draft Declaration principles, mainly the right to self-determination, territorial integrity and the non-intervention in domestic affairs, had an important place at debates previous to the summit.

According to Barbados Foreign Ministry officials, the Final Declaration will demand the lifting of the blockade imposed by Washington while dignitaries will sign a complementary anti-terror document.

On Thursday before signing the documents, the regional leaders will attend a special ceremony to remember the victims of the terrorist attack on a Cuban plane off the Barbadian coasts on October 6, 1976.
