Senior Citizens Hit the Books
Havana, May 23 (Prensa Latina) More than 30,000 elderly citizens have been
graduated from the University Departments for Aged Adults (CUAM, in Spanish)
in the past five years, which have been aimed at improving these persons´
quality of life, Granma newspaper reported Monday.
The initiative, opened in 2000, has today 17, 500 elderly students, assembled
in 636 departments and branch offices, and 7,000 professors, experts and lecturers,
the newspaper stated.
Classrooms are not necessarily located in the country´s main university
centers, but in cultural centers, museums, cooperatives, community schools
and towns, and no requirement is necessary to enroll.
According to CAUM officials, these courses not only raise their educational
level, but also their self-esteem, and allow them to take an active part in
society.
