Protest in US against Asylum to Terrorist Posada

Washington, May 26 (Prensa Latina) A regional demonstration has been called for El Paso, Texas, on Monday June 13 by A.N.S.W.E.R., a coalition against war and racism, to demand the extradition to Venezuela of Cuban born terrorist Luis Posada Carriles.

The mass protest has been called to coincide with an immigration court hearing in that south western town that will look into Posada´s immigration status.

Organizers of the demonstration are also calling for locally coordinated protests in cities and towns all across the country, all under the theme: "No Asylum for Luis Posada Carriles. Extradite him to Venezuela. End the 45-Year US War Against Cuba."

At that hearing, Posada Carriles´ Miami lawyers plan to resubmit his petition for asylum and argue that he should be considered a US resident and allowed to remain in the country.

FBI and CIA files corroborate Posada was the mastermind, together with Orlando Bosch, of the mid-air bombing of a Cubana jetliner in October 1976 that killed all 73 people onboard, among other acts of terror against Cuban targets and individuals and from other countries.

He was awaiting a trial on appeal in Venezuela, from where he organized the plane bombing, when he was allowed to escape from prison in 1985.

The CIA-trained operative was convicted in Panama after being caught in November 2000 with 33 pounds of C-4 explosives intended for assassinating Cuban President Fidel Castro at a public meeting, the coalition underlines in a public statement.

Since his premature release from jail last August by then outgoing president Mireya Moscoso, at the behest of the Bush administration, Posada Carriles was in hiding in Central America till he surfed in Miami early March, A.N.S.W.E.R. adds.

The group recalls that on April 12 "the notorious anti-Cuba terrorist and killer appealed for asylum in the United States through his attorneys in Miami. After living openly in Miami for over a month, the federal government, bowing to intensifying public pressure, detained Posada on May 17 and charged him with illegally entering the United States."

The coalition brought to mind how Orlando Bosch, despite Justice Department order to deport him in 1989, then president George Bush, Sr., overrode the deportation order in 1990 and the CIA-trained terrorist now lives in Miami.

Describing Bosch, former US Asst. Attorney General Joseph D. Whitley said: "For 30 years Bosch has been resolute and unwavering in his advocacy of terrorist violence. … His actions have been those of a terrorist, unfettered by laws or human decency, threatening and inflicting violence without regard to the identity of his victims."

These words, A.N.S.W.E.R. stresses, hold true for Posada Carriles, his partner-in-crime. The organization fears Posada Carriles might get the same protective treatment that his fellow terrorist.
