Cuba Opens Eye Hospitals in Ecuador

Quito, Jun 15, 2006 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Vice President Carlos Lage is starting Thursday a visit to Ecuador to attend the opening of two ophthalmologic hospitals with the island's equipment and physicians to provide surgery for patients with eye afflictions.

According to diplomatic sources, Lage will arrive Friday and is expected to visit centers of social and cultural interest in this capital, meet with Ecuadorian authorities and attend along with President Alfredo Palacio the opening of the two ophthalmologic centers.

One of these facilities, which has been working since May 29, is located in the city of Latacunga, capital of Cotopaxi province, and the second one is in Santa Elena canton, in Guayas province.

Interviewed by Prensa Latina, Cuban ambassador to this country Benigno Perez told both governments will ink two agreements to provide surgery in these facilities.

Cuba, Ecuador and the Cotopaxi prefecture will sign an accord in Latacunga, and both nations will ink a second agreement with the National Institute on Childhood and Family in Santa Elena.
