Cuban Solidarity in Brazil

Recife, Brazil, Jun 19/2006 (Prensa Latina) The 14th National Convention of Solidarity with Cuba, held in this capital city of Pernambuco State, has generated agreements that multiply the movement’s actions throughout Brazil.

According to the program adopted by 485 delegates Sunday, over 50 cities from 14 states plus the federal district will implement accords of the final resolution.

The forum that took place from June 14 to 17 at the PernambucoFederalUniversity approved a group of motions against the blockade of Cuba and the release of five Cuban anti-imperialist fighters unfairly imprisoned in US for fighting terrorism.

These organizations will carry out a vigil September 11-12 in front of the US Embassy and Consulate offices, as part of the international day of support for the Cuban Five cause.

These groups of solidarity are working together to fight terrorism, violations of human rights, the blockade on Cuba and in favor of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas, for real regional integration.

Among the convention’s decisions is Cuba’s participation in Rio de Janeiro’s Pan-American Games in 2007 and installation of satellite dishes to receive and broadcast Telesur and Cubavision programs in Brazil.

The Cuban delegation was presided over by Jose Marti National Library director Eliades Ignacio Acosta Matos, and included Mirta Rodriguez, mother of Antonio Guerrero, one of the Cuban Five, Aleida Guevara, daughter of legendary guerrilla fighter Ernesto Che Guevara, and Young Communist League National Bureau member, Maday Iglesias Perez.
