Guyana President in Cuba

Havana, Feb 1, 2006. (Prensa Latina) President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, Bharrat Jagdeo, is starting a working visit to Cuba, responding to an invitation by Fidel Castro.

According to Granma newspaper, the aim of his visit is to step up the excellent ties of friendship and cooperation existing between the two Caribbean nations and respective governments.

Jagdeo's agenda includes meetings with President Fidel Castro and other officials, as well as touring sites of historic, scientific and economic interest.

After his arrival, the Guyanese dignitary praised the work of Cuban doctors who have been working in his country for over 20 years, and also referred to the over 200 Guyanese students who have graduated in different specialties here.

Six Guyanese who were studying medicine Cuba died in the CIA-backed terrorist attack against a Cuban airliner on October 6, 1976. The mid-air explosion caused the aircraft to crash off the coasts of Barbados, killing the 73 people on board, including the whole Cuban youth fencing team.

Cuba established diplomatic relations with Guyana on December 8, 1972, at the same time as with Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and Barbados.
